So, which three clubs will it be then?

Some of the boys turning up to the Spittle Shield on Saturday will never have played in a Spittle before, so it is worth reminding you that the Sponsor likes to ease the society into their season by requiring them to select just three clubs for his event.

Three clubs and a putter. That’s all, unless you’re me, and you get to carry the OoM Spoon around after only hitting it once.

We’ve done this format twice, round the rather benign West Mids GC, and the even less challenging Stonebridge GC. Mr Milmore won both events by some distance, both times racking up 42 points. He has therefore been the custodian of the Munich Stein with crappy hinge (or whatever it is called) since early 2013, and we have yet to see him drink a drop of Jug ale from it.

However, the key question here is regarding the clubs – which three of your favourites should you bring with you? Can you afford the luxury of a driver, or a sand wedge? I bet not too many of you have a good working knowledge of the course, and I shouldn’t really give you too many pointers considering the ridiculous number of shots I’m giving to people this year, but the Abbey is a bit of a strange course, and you need to be ready to work a few shots on the 3 holes over 500 yards, or the tricky par 3’s – particularly the 6th and the 10th. And the 18th without a long iron

I don’t know what I’m going to use – 3W, 6I, PW seems to be sensible, but would the rescue make more sense? Or the Driver? You kind of rule yourself out of the Big Dog by not having the Big Dog in the bag.

It should be fun, but I would recommend you review the scorecard and plan your way round the course – or you know, turn up with a bag full of bats, decide in the car park and then find yourself on the 2nd without a club to get up to the green.
