Mike should be getting good at this – he’s getting enough practice. This is a very, ahem, representative, report of the event. It neglected to mention that 42 points should have had him in front of the previous Captain for blatant banditry, particularly with just 4 clubs. It also didn’t highlight that, if he’d been in our group, he would have been laughing too hard at the filth to even score half of that – Millers and his ‘Warm Up’ channels was a particular high point for me.
The second tournament of the 2011 WHVGS season, The Spittle Shield, was held on Saturday 9 April at the West Midlands Golf Club at Barston. We arrived to be met with the comforting words from Noz of, “Tell the barman you want your breakfast”. Now in the past the word “breakfast” has left us feeling downhearted, but not today, the “Full English” really was a “Full English” and it went down a proper treat.
It went down so well with me in fact that I needed a tactical poo straight after and this meant that I missed the ceremonial “tossing of the balls” and the picking of the groups. However, I had no worries as I had been grouped with Ron and Juice and we were first off. This year’s Spittle Shield had been changed slightly and was a 4-club challenge. Much conversation had been had in the week’s prior about the possible combinations of clubs to use and I finally went for the 3 iron, 6 iron, wedge and putter combination, but there were many different combinations out there, all with perfectly good reasons why.
My first 3 iron tee shot of the day was pretty good and straight up the middle of the fairway. This bode well for the rest of the round and so it turned out. In fact all 3 of us had pretty solid starts with both good and bad shots. I felt I was continuing my form from the Gibbon of a few weeks earlier and my scoring seemed to be proving that. After nine holes I was on 20 points and could already hear the calls of “shark” from around the course. The first nine also included my first birdie of the year on the par 5, 7th and this of course meant that I joined the WHVGS birdie club and received one of the nine highly sought after WHVGolf.com magnetic ball markers.
The back nine continued in the much same way for me. Everything was going straight and on the whole where I wanted it to go. My chipping and putting were also working well and I was therefore also scoring well. So well in fact that I scored 22 points on the back 9 to give me a final total of 42 points. As we were the first group out, there was a bit of a wait, but my score was not bettered by anyone else and I was consequently crowned as winner of the 2011 Spittle Shield.
It proved to be an excellent day for everyone, the weather was beautiful, the course was in excellent condition, the breakfast was fabulous and many congratulations should go to Noz for his excellent organisational skills.
Finally, the official payouts of the event were as follows: 1st with 42 Points and winning £15 was Bacon, 2nd with 36 Points and winning £10 was The President and 3rd with 33 Points was the Web Donk. The Big Dog and £5 went to Ron and the Shark and £5 went to Bruce.
Finally, the post-match ‘BETRON’ Grand National Sweepstake was won much to his delight, by Millers.
Congratulations to all the winners and see you all on Sunday May 15 for the Brissle Open.
Bacon.
