2013 Skins Match Report

Some pictures of a day in the sunshine (and who knows, eventually I might get round to a swingtime – I got everyone except Noz on film).

I didn’t manage to get a picture of New Aust, or Big Aust, or Other Aust, or whatever Paul’s nickname will be.

Here’s the report from Bruce

Venue:             Henley Golf & Country Club, Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire

Date:                20th April 2013

Entrees:           Millers, Darren, Neil B, Neil, Curt, Big Aust, Nigel, Simon, Noz & Bruce.

Apologies:       For my spelling and grammar. If you have a problem with it, then change it yourself rather than moaning to me about it!!

After a well timed 7 week break the WHV tour was back with the PR Skins, which this year, was host by Paul Milmore . That’s correct Millers was actually given the responsibility to organise a WHV event, scary I know and even more when we heard that he was going to change the format, more on this later.

It seems that in 2013 the Society is set to welcome more new members than in any other year, which is great news. The PR Skins welcomed another 3 new members, Neil B (Darren’s Brother), Neil and Big Aust all Pal O Millers. As normal they were strip of any cash they had and given there WHV shirts.

For the 3rd event in a row our host, Millers, forgot the WHV belt and I can’t say that I saw either the Shark or the Big Dog. However, the previous night there was a very seedy photograph of a half naked Millers with the Big Dog on his crutch. Why you might ask, the truth is I don’t know, to be honest I’ve started to stop listening when he talks.

So to the new format, and as millers is so good at keeping things simple I let him explain it for you.  “There will be no dogs or sharks and the skins will be competed for in each of the 3 fourballs.  All that will count is your net score (based on full handicap) on the hole against those in your playing group.  All holes will have a monetary value, going to the outright net score winner and rolled over in the event of a tie on a hole until someone wins the lolly.  Each of the 3 groups will just need to keep a tally of who has won what lolly.  Overall title, for hip flask and OoM purposes only – no additional cash, will go to the player with the most money. In the event of a tie for the overall title, or any skins not won by the 18th hole in a any of the 3 groups, there will be a play off.  I trust that this can be back down the first time, but may have to be on the putting green / driving range. The cost will be £40 per boy all in.  The prize pot per group will be £31.50, with the first 9 holes being worth £1.50 each and the second 9 being worth £2.00 each.  This is a huge increase on usual prize pot divvy up (almost a ton given out compared to around £20 normally), mainly due to my own generosity, ridiculous fines from belt and stein forgetting, and direct influence over Board policy on you behalf.”

So as you can expect we stood on the 1st tier knowing exactly what was going on. The groups were decided with the normal ball toss and they came out as follows:

Group 1 – Bruce, Neil and Curt

Group 2 – Noz, Darren & Neil B

Group 3 – Millers, Simon and Big Aust

As normal it’s difficult to know what’s happening in each group so I can only fill you in with what I know.

  • Curt’s swing as got quicker which took him a little longer than usual to get used to hence picking up his 1st skin on the 14th. Great to have him back playing, it’s always such a nice quiet and relaxed round of gold when he is playing!!!
  • Neil B, making his WHV debut, offered to get his boy out after an impressive 25 yard drive on the 1st tee.
  • Noz and myself got burnt
  • The last group finish the 18th with no one winning skins, so it was ok to the 1st hole to have a play off.  No actually it was to the putting green to have a putt off. 1 putt each and who ever got closest won. Nothing like being able to watch two people putt before you to get a good idea of the speed and slope of the green and surprise surprise Big Aust, putting last, won the skins.
  • The overall winner of the day was me with 12 skins (£18.00)

All in all it was a great day out, nice food, lots of sun, some good golf and a few nice beers at the end. You couldn’t ask for more.
