2012 Match Report – Amy Austin

Continuing to try and make sure we have everything on the site – here’s a match report that has been missing – others will follow…here’s one from Noz

Tournament: The Amy Austin

Timeline: Friday, 12th October 2012

Venue: Can’t remember the name of the course

Golf shoes : Turned around to get them, whilst still in the confines of the village of Knowle

Gregs picked up me and Mike at about 9ish, I made the customary trip to Costa to buy him a cup of horrendously overpriced foam and we were on the motorway by 9.30 as per the meticulously laid out schedule.

The trip down was largely uneventful, we took no wrong turns, despite Mike being in charge of directions, and I can’t remember a huge amount about the conversation. I think it was fairly bog standard stuff, we discussed Mikes lack of hair and lack of flair and Gregs proposed new Rolex. We were the first to arrive and sat around as people began to trickle in and hand money to Gregs for various match fees and poorly priced bets. Thankfully Pedro Power arrived and the market eventually opened up a little, but that’s for another match report. Gregs bored everyone to death with a story about some complaint he had made to T-Mobile, for me it was the low point of the entire weekend.

I have to say that 10 days on I can’t remember a lot about the golf, in fact I’ve had to rack my brains to remember who I was playing with. It was Pedro and Gregs. We had a little side bet on nearest the pin on the par 3s (I won all but 1 of the 5 and on the other occasion none of us hit the green). Pedro started strongly from memory and I can’t really remember a lot else. Aust won the shark and Bacon, wanting to prove me right about his lack of flair, won the dog using an iron, a punishable offence in my mind. Gregs came second. Aust told his usual story about missing some putts, he needs to work on the mental side of his game.

Unfortunately Baxter prevented himself from turning up on time for the golf, his prediction of arriving by the 3rd hole was wildly overoptimistic he managed to arrive sometime after the 19th. I have in the past suggested he attend a Time Management course, it seems he has ignored this advice and instead spent Friday lazing around in hospital waiting rooms and going on a tour of a sweet factory in Leicester, he didn’t even bring any free samples or souvenirs

After the golf we headed the few miles to the hotel, Bacon was navigating and we took a wrong turn. There were a number of surprises waiting for us in the hotel, the price of the beer (and cider) being the most unpleasant and the Christian womens retreat being the most unusual. I was rooming with Millers, a real treat for me, particularly on Saturday morning. Miller clearly aware that I needed some more sleep spoke frankly and candidly and at great, great length about the benefits of lean design, his learning’s, and the significant financial benefits to Walsall council of his latest programme, unfortunately despite outward appearance it wasn’t an interview, he only had pants on,  so I couldn’t offer him the job. I would of though. Unfortunately to top it off, I didn’t even get back to sleep.

We all met in the bar at about 7ish and Baxter and Rob arrived, Rob was about 12 hours early and Baxter about 10 hours late, we had to wait a while for the Christian womens retreat to finish gorging themselves before we could eat, the buffet meal was quite nice all in all, and we headed back down to the bar. Again I can’t remember too much about the goings on. There was a lot of discussion about the standard of Baxters “Announcement” which had baffled some of the less quick witted society members, and Baxters parasitic mid-tier accountancy firm. There was also some discussion about Gregs approach to dealing with the post at Stratforward, I can’t say too much in print as the legal case against him is ongoing and Miller has already covered it far more eloquently than I ever could. I have no idea what time everyone went to bed, although I think I’d be safe in assuming it was early.
