2016 Spittle Shield Match Report

Apologies to Wolverine for taking so long to post this, I probably fell asleep reading it… Congratulations to the winners indeed, oh is one of them me? How very lovely for me, on my birthday… Mike doesn’t mention the state of the course, or Nozzers gout, or Woolly’s blatant sharking

WHVGS 2016 Spittle Shield Report

The 2016 WHVGS season started with the Spittle Shield being held at Stonebridge GC on a cold but sunny 27th of February, which was also happened to be my birthday.  Happy Birthday to me.

My day began with 2 mad little boys waking up to tell me it was my birthday and asking whether they could eat my cake now.  I didn’t even know I had a cake.  Eventually the cake was found – R2D2 and very nice it was too.  If you’re interested, said boys got me a couple of presents – a Hey Duggee DVD (the one with the Super Squirrel Badge episode), a bag of Gummy Bears (which they ate) and a book on Hip Hop.

The golf day began with a very good full English.  Praise should go to Noz for organising that.  We also found in our midst a new member – Hollywood Arran.  As you can imagine as soon as Millers spied new meat he was straight on it regaling poor Hollywood Arran with tales of general filth.  Luckily it didn’t put him off too much and both Hollywood Arran and Millers were drawn with me.

This year’s Spittle Shield was a 3-club plus putter challenge.  I went for the 3 iron, 6 iron, wedge and putter combination.  After a couple of mediocre first holes I was internally wondering about the merits of the format and my choice of clubs – thankfully it improved.  Also improving was the pace of play.  Not only were Hollywood Arran and myself having to put up with Millers’ 5 minute set up procedure before each tee shot we were also being slowed down by another society on the course, yes another society.  Millers’ set up procedure didn’t get any faster but thankfully the pace of play ahead did.

Overall my play was straight and pretty steady.  There were a couple of gross birdies on the front nine which were very nice and after 9 hoes I was on a respectable 18 points.  The back 9 continued in much the same way for me.  Everything was going straight and on the whole where I wanted it to go.  My chipping and putting were also working well and I was therefore also scoring pretty well.  In the end I scored a further 18 points and ended with 36 in total.  I was very happy with playing to my new reduced handicap in the first round of the year.  My score was not bettered by anyone else and I was consequently crowned as winner of the 2016 Spittle Shield.

It proved to be an excellent day for everyone, the weather was bright and sunny if not a bit cold, the breakfast was good and many congratulations should go to Noz for his excellent organisational skills.  It’s only a shame he couldn’t play because of his gout.  (I can honesty say I never thought I would write that last sentence.)

Finally, the official results were as follows: 1st was Bacon, 2nd Donk and 3rd was Woolly.  The Big Dog went to PK and the Shark went to Hollywood Arran.  Surely a fine awaits for PK.  Congratulations to all the winners.
