The Amy Ozzle – Friday 9th October 2020 – Royal North Devon Golf Club

The beautifully manicured links of Royal North Devon comprise one of the most magnificently presented tracks ever graced by our erstwhile society. Such a strong and stunning course can obviously only be appreciated by true champions and the ante-tee banter had consisted mostly of pointed criticism from one of the less gifted WHVGS golfers and the amassed field was, again, notable for the absence of an idiotic local, who we can only presume was busy tending to a nearby swede patch.

With most of the field seemingly having stopped at some point at Sedgemoor services on the southern journey, the King of the Majors imbibed in a cup of McDonalds coffee from the mighty Suisse Stein and, combined with the bright sunshine, all seemed very well in the world.

Despite a series of recent and not inexpensive lessons with the famed Fred Leadbetter, the Millers golf game seemed to have only developed in terms of the additional time taken to play the game, his face seemingly contorted by the additional machinations imparted by Whispering Fred.

With the flair men having consumed a pint of strong lager apiece, the field congregated on the first tee and, following a few months of marvelling at the course ahead, a deep inhalation of Atlantic air and a contemplative nod at the legendary History Boy, play was underway.

With the semi-holographic crystal trophy at the forefront of everybody’s mind, the society noted the physical and mental strength of the WHVGS King of the Gym, who chose to face the bracing October sea breeze in shorts and distinctive green shirt of a major champion. Play was seemingly mixed, with a few questionable early shots from the field and Paul continuing to gurn as though he were on one of his increasingly age appropriate visits to the white isle.

Whilst the ocean air became increasingly bracing, Society play began to hot up, with Nozzy recording a birdie at the 4th and the even more hirsute Jimenez taking the Shark. The birdie fest continued, with the Pres racking one down 8 and Miller, seemingly having successfully wrestled with the additional voice inside his head, doing the same. More birdies were to follow for Juice (10), Copters Johnson (12) and the King of the Boys down 18. Juico was swinging well and had taken another Dog title with a mighty tee shot.

During another notable WHVGS day there were several further issues of note which included, although were not limited to the following:

• Finchy didn’t turn up with a new driver
• Hole-in-One Jon failed to have a hole in hone
• It pissed down, sideways, for several minutes
• There were reports of horse hoof marks on one of the greens
• Aust failed to make the end of the round due to the lack of a motorised buggy
• The inaugural King of the Sprints triumphed via countback

WHVGS 2014 Amy Austin & President’s Classic Report

Because of totally rubbish weather at the otherwise immaculately organised President’s Classic, the Friday of the 2014 WHVGS Claret Jug Weekender was played for both The Amy Austin and The President’s Classic

It was held at Prince’s Golf Course in Sandwich, Kent.  A really beautiful and historic course, which has held, Open Championships, British Amateur Championships and now a much-coveted WHV event.  I doubt whether my count-back win will make the winners boards in the Clubhouse but I’m sure that the WHVGS has left quite a few things at Prince’s – mainly lost golf balls.

We had all made different arrangements to get down to Kent and as Mrs Buttery had been on the razz the previous night I had to make my own way down on Friday morning.  That did however mean I could listen to Stereolab, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada et al without getting moaned at by our Oasis and Long Pigs-loving TD.

The groupings went very well for me as I was grouped with Donk, Millers and Woolly.  Being grouped with Donk can sometimes lead to him getting a little bit arsey with me as I keep asking how far it is to the green.  However, Donk and Millers were able to furnish me with a little gem of information that may mean I never need to ask for yardage again.  Apparently good courses put yardages on every sprinkler on the fairway – who’d have thunk it.  Anyway to say that little piece of information was life-changing or at least round changing is the understatement of the year.  I may now be able to play 18 holes of golf in the future without royally pissing off Noz…perhaps.

Anyway, my golf was pretty good all day.  I drove OK-ish, hit my irons straight and putted well.  After nine holes I was on 17 points and scored another 17 on the back 9 to finish with 34.

It was actually tight at the top with 8 of us scoring 30 and above and I only beat Boycie on count-back after he bottled a 2ft putt on the 18^th which would have given him 35.  As it turned out that slip was the only one Boycie made all weekend as swept all before him to win the Claret Jug and Green Jacket.

All in all, it was a great day, the weather was beautiful, the course was in excellent condition and was testing and I won my first piece of silverware/glassware since 2011.  Many congratulations should go to Doug for his excellent organisational skills.

Finally, the official payouts of the event were as follows: 1st with 34 Points and winning £15 was Bacon and 2nd with 34 Points and winning £10 was Boycie.  The Big Dog and £5 went to The President and the Shark and £5 went to Bruce.

Class shines through as the TD returns to winning ways

The TD reigned triumphant over a quality field in the 2011 WHVGS Amy Austin championship.

The players, comprising Messrs Brown, Bennett, Harrison, Baxter, Austin, Allsop, Spittle, Milmore, Compton, Ash, Hopkin and the Champion elect, assembled in the fine facilities of the Celtic Manor Resort on the morning of Friday 14^th October.

Players seemed to have undertaken varying levels of preparation, with several arriving sufficiently early to relax, eat breakfast and store cheese, whilst others arrived hungry and very irritable…Nozzer.

Having been deposited at the Montgomerie course in style, the players gathered on the 1^st tee to begin the customary banter with the course starter…who prattled on about several insignificant matters before omitting to mention that winter rules were in operation…nice work.

The Montgomerie could be described as having spectacular views, with dramatic tee shots over valleys and breathtaking downhill shots. Two long par fives, a number of short par fours and several testing par threes, which all add up to an exciting and rewarding challenge. After the event, the TD was simply heard to describe it as “A true test of quality golfing talent”.

Several bets had been placed with BETRON prior to the first ball being struck, including what seemed to have been an audacious punt from inveterate gambler Ash, who had lumped heavily on himself. One can only imagine how confident the Captain would have been on receiving that particular stake…although he was looking particularly Ashen faced (Ashen faced, geddit ?) when the most unorthodox swing on the WHVGS Tour – in fact, the most unorthodox swing on most tours you could imagine – notched up 24 stapleforth points on the front 9.

The TD, who had been reminded by the Web Donkey that he currently occupied the longest break between winning events, was playing some very steady golf although in a very casual manner – choosing to select his next club immediately after driving and then jogging to his ball – often to find that he had selected a less than appropriate club, but playing the shot anyway.

The relaxed approach was however paying dividends and 2 solid shots and a ridiculously long putt resulted in a 3 net 1 for a net albatross and 5 points on one particular test of true golfing talent.

The other members of the TD grouping were also similarly relaxed, being convinced that Peter had continued his fine form and taken Ronnie to the cleaners. All played ridiculous tiger-line drives up 18, before getting to the green to discover that the TD was actually in contention, with 2 putts for 36 points to win on countback.

There was a significant devil sat on the TD’s shoulder urging him to knock his first putt 30 yards down the fairway just to see the look on Ronnie’s face although sanity returned before putting to take the honours.

On securing 2^nd place, Peter gained a return from BETRON although the Captain delighted in telling the assembled masses the various amounts of money which Ash had turned down as offers to settle the bet prior to the end of the round.

The Big Dog was taken by Ronald and the Shark by Bacon Bonce.

The prizes awarded were as follows and a very healthy £85 was retained for the WHVGS coffers…much to the delight of Mr Milmore, who was later further incensed by the practice of ‘scraping’ an additional £20 of sustainable funding from the post-event meal kitty.

1^st prize – £15 and the Amy Ozzle Trophy (to include a retraction of such a trophy being referred to as a gimp).

2^nd prize – £10 and a slightly wounded pride at having only scored 12 points on the back 9.

The Amy Austin 2010

The events that unfold below provide the story of the WHVGS Amy Austin tournament, held at Dartmouth Golf Club on Friday the 8^th October in the year 2010.  As I am only vaguely aware of my own participation in this competition some of the below may not be truly representative of fact – for which I wholeheartedly apologise to the society in advance.

For the first time in the recorded annals of WHVGS history, all 3 rounds of the claret jug weekend were played out on the same course; a triumph of poor endeavour over bad luck by erstwhile organiser Mr W Spittle (to whom – it must be said – all plaudits are due for a fine weekend indeed).

The field was very strong, with 11 of the 13 Jug entrants on show; and those 11 comprising the top of the OOM leaderboard. And Ads. And Noz. And the TD. Well, you get the general picture. Missing were the Idiot and Campo, which was no surprise at all. We all expected uber-shark Campo to turn up just for the Jug, win some cash by calmly playing Ron off the park somehow, and then shoot off home before the rush. And as for the Idiot – well, he hasn’t been turning up on tour recently as he’s been cycling a lot. Obviously, he’s very excited having now learnt to ride without stabilisers, and so we concur with his Dad’s opinion that “Golf was just a fad to Rob, like riding his bike is now. He also likes trains and dinosaurs, and wants to be a spaceman. So expect him to miss a lot of the 2011 tour as well – I’ll be taking him to the Science, Natural History & Tysley Railway museums then.”

Anyway, the day proper started with the sight of the properly erected WHV banner resplendent by the driveway for all of Devon to see (Coops had granted permission for this). The Rep continued his excellent society value by erecting a proper scoreboard in the bar. It was then time for a couple of drinks and the Captain’s usual win over Ron at pool. As is customary, the TD earned the first forfeit of the weekend – this time by not drinking from the Ornate Suisse Stein. However this did lead the board to make yet another excellent strategic decision: targeting the society to acquire at least one new Stein a year, each one with different European provenance. Woe betide anybody who loses one of these.

Onto the round, where WHV went for a 3-4-4 formation. Leading the society out were Donk, Coops and the TD. The last walked the course – we assume he was Not Scared to do this, being the Alpha Male and a Helluva Boy (best one in the world). Although the tee-shot was a bit blind (or at least this observer is) the standard of driving looked good – and had Pedro Power not been insolvent from their eponymous Masters event a good bet with them would have been on 2 of these 3 at that time. Next off were the Star group – all four OOM winners with insignia proud above the WHV crest on their shirts. Obviously the usual tiresome debate happened; wherein the legitimacy of one of these stars was questioned. And equally obviously such discussion was given short shrift, it being a matter of historical record. Again four decent shots; with some surprise registered that the Skipper got one off straight with his new swing. Well surprise from those members in the know about swing technique – not Ron, who couldn’t tell the difference. Last off were the Rep, Austhuizen, Tour Leader Bacon & Ads. We don’t know how good their hitting was, we can only assume they did not go on to let the society down.

From this point my knowledge of the other groups’ play is sparse at best. Bruce had already played his best shot of the first hour, proceeding to place his second out of bounds from the centre of the fairway with 140yds to go. Noz also blobbed (we were informed a couple of times that the Amy Austin is all about handicap management), while the Captain and Pres got 2 and 3 points respectively. This was the general way of things in the Star group: the Captain getting the first 4-pointer of the day at the sinuous fourth: form and swing then immediately took him onwards to stiff a 9-iron to within 8 feet of the fifth to win the Shark. (He did three-putt though. For the society in general, putting was not the order of the day – even Austhuizen was heard to say “I’ll never three-putt that many times in a round again”). Going out the Pres and Captain were level on 16 points; and after 1 point from the first 5 holes Bruce had rallied with 13 from the next four. Elsewhere on the course, the TD had started well but then saw some Full Hammer Crayfish “Giving it all that”. It’s fair to say his focus was not on golf from that point onwards, which possibly cost him the win. In terms of the card, mention must also be made of the handicap outriders’ scores after 9 – Ads with an excellent 17 points, and Ron with a full 18, including a couple of great scores. I’m thinking of the 4 net 0 and Par net 1 in particular.

Onto the back 9; and when in the Star group Bruce failed to maintain his momentum, we were left with the “Boardroom Battle” between the Pres and Captain. Dougal went 3 up after 13, but the Prof drew level as it stood on the (remarkably) stroke index 5 17th. Here the Pres hooked a drive left and elected not to play a provisional. On not finding his ball near the boundary hedge he contemplated returning to play a tee-shot – at which point Noz politely reminded him that one of the reasons R4 was constructed was so players didn’t waste society time by doing such things. The Captain thought it could be done as the next group were not yet on the tee, but Baxter demurred as he was Absolutely Fine With That. Had No Problem Whatsoever. The Captain scored 4 points. At the 18^th tee there was a bit of a hold-up where the Captain, tongue firmly in cheek, asked the President if he should protect his handicap. We don’t understand the President’s humour failure, as he was Absolutely Fine – but he furiously scribbled this comment down on an impromptu Indictment sheet.  The Captain had the misfortune to take 4 putts from where his tee-shot placed him just off the green for 18 points coming in, and is in no doubt that a fine is forthcoming at the AGM.

 A quick break for dinner, then on with the evening. The PR was tasked to find any pub that had 2 out of Rattler, a Pool Table and a Jukebox. He sourced one with all three. The Rattler flew, the TD was told to leave, Ron and Peds had a downing completion with the remaining Rattler tray and that is where my scattered memory gave up the ghost completely.

So, on to the first day of the Jug proper and from these a few questions to resolve:

Would Bacon bottle the OOM? Would the President remain Absolutely Fine over the weekend? Would Austhuizen ever three-putt again? Would the TD get over his Full Hammer Crayfish? Would Campo Shark it? Could anything make the Society remember events after the Rattler?

Well, if there are any answers to these questions, they will be found in the match report for the Big One, the Claret Jug…

TD is playing all the golf, but not doing the Friday job

The Venue

Truly a magnificent resort, almost perfect for the WHV season closer. Everyone commended the President for his choice of St Mellion. Only a few niggles were raised – that the final round of the WHV open would be played on some temporary greens, that the tee boxes were generally rubbish and that there was nowhere at all within walking distance where you could buy a box of fags.

The Nicklaus track couldn’t be faulted, everyone admitted that some of the tee shots were simply stunning, and that they’d give their right arms to own one of the cornish stone houses overlooking the course. Many thought it to be the best course they’d played, even if it was “b@stard hard”.

The Golf

The challenge of the course was going to favour discipline, straight hitting, conservative shot selection and steady putting. Or at least someone who could deliver at least one of those for at least 8 or 9 holes. Discussions turned to the fact that a big championship resort course might favour someone like the Web Donkey, who plays a lot of ‘Business Development’ golf round the Arden course at the Forest of Arden, and so would be acclimatised to a tough track.

News reached the leading group on the back nine that the Captain was playing a blinder and thought he was in with a sniff of winning the event. This was intriguing to hear, as the Web Donkey had just had a run of 7 or 8 consecutive holes with birdie putts – playing par golf on a championship course, and was a good 10 points ahead of the Captain – a bluff was attempted to see if we could attempt to convince the Prof that he was on for his first victory since the tour went professional. I don’t think it held, and in any case, he was far more focused on a spread bet against Ron, as usual.

Meanwhile, Noz was regretting his decision to carry, and walk the course – at one point he was begging Ads to carry his bag for him and even went so far as to start putting his clubs in other people’s bags.

Noz had also noticed that the run of pars was putting the Web Donkey, his chief challenger for the Order of Merit, in serious danger of facing a points cut alongside the victory cut. Hence, from around the 14th hole, everything that was less than perfect was treated with a volley of abuse of cheating, even a lipped out birdie putt on stroke index one, from off the green no less. Similarly, the decision to drill a 2 iron down the middle of the following par 5 was seen as protecting his handicap, even though it resulted in another 3 point par, was viewed by the Players Rep as tantamount to stealing the Order of Merit.

Compounding the crime, when the wheels came off on 17 and 18 and the winner blobbed both holes by playing some adventurous golf to shut Noz up – keeping his score at a safe 35 points saw Noz off and running to all and sundry about how I’d been cheating. We now know that he’d been told not to bother coming home if he didn’t end up winning the tour title by Mrs Noz, so maybe it would be viewed as acceptable to single out and abuse his No. 1 challenger. However, the blob blob finish by a winner facing a handicap cut would not be the last of the weekend…it will be interesting to see how Noz reports his own miraculous failure to card a point once he thought his title was safe.

We have found how to neuter the perennial challenge of Coops – never out of the top 2 since his return to the tour in 08 – let him drink the night before a round. Even when powered by a full pack of tabs and a large Cuban, it takes him at least 12 holes to sober up enough to direct that driver. This was evidenced by him collecting the longest drive prize on the 18th by launching a howitzer past the collected Big Dog’s of the GS, it also served notice to Ron that his beloved Hulk might be in jeopardy.

Oh, and WD won by an 8 shot margin even with a blob blob finish, Ron was 2nd on Countback and Bruce won the nearest the pin. I’m obliged by the constitution to provide money details: WD £15, Ron £10, Coops & Bonus £5 each. The sponsor has also provided a magnificent trophy, and will gladly tell all and sundry about the miracle of engraving machines.

The Job

As required by local byelaws, as the winner of the Spittle Shield, Mr Hopkin was required to consume all alcoholic beverages out of the 1968 Munich Beer Stein.

Then Bacon managed to dump a whole pint of Guinness down Aust’s only pair of jeans, and as his only other option were some Hugo Boss drawstring lounge pyjamas, he was not best pleased.

There was much debate over chicken supreme and cornish cheese as to what the society should do with its’ evening in Cornwall. A number of members were fighting hard for a night out in the ‘Mouth – wanting to get on a proper job that concluded with Donnas and Doners, others were displaying tactical foresight and recommending an evening in the hotel to get properly prepared for the Jug (Aust being the cheerleader for this option, important to note). Eventually, after haranguing an adolescent waiter, we determined that Saltash was an acceptable compromise – out of the hotel, likely to serve cider, not going to be full of sailors looking to fight a bunch of accountants and analysts down from Solihull. All agreed that if Saltash was a little too provincial, it was going to be OK to push on into Plymouth.

Our plan was made after we’d booked the cabs, and the fat lad tag team taxis from Moustache Cabs weren’t happy in the change in plans, but this was quickly resolved by a recommendation to “hide” the cabs from the one man who’d not made it upstairs without hearing the call of his favourite place. “Where’s Noz?” was the call. “Having A Sh!t, of course”. The thought of a poor man being abandoned by his boys because he had to lay cable appealed mightily to our cabbie and we set off for Saltash in good spirits, after we waited for Noz to pinch off a quick one.

Society protocol dictates that the evening’s events will forever stay on tour (not that there was anything salacious to report), but here are some phrases to stimulate the memories of those who where there:

• “This place is rubbish, lets to to Plymouth” – repeat ad nauseum from Coops
• “They serve RATTTLER!” and then, several times “Ten Pints of Rattler Please” – the President enjoying himself
• “The game is 5 card no peek…..” – ruined in about 5 minutes by a fevered discussion between Noz and Ron about the legalities of a £1 raise on a 20p call
• “Come on mate, let us in, we’ve got money and will spend loads” – Ron to the Doorman/Proprieter of the WarmIce, late licensed bar in Saltash
• “This place is rubbish” – everyone after getting into said late bar
• “What do you mean you’re going to bed. Are you gay?!” – a resurgent and rampant Aust, who’d almost fallen asleep during the card game, upon returning to the hotel and proceeding to challenge for Last Man Standing rights
• “Why is it dark in here and why are my trousers round my ankles?” the Prof, upon waking up in a random cubicle in one of the many Gents bathrooms in the hotel (this might have been following the DPS, but still worthy of inclusion!)

Match report from the Winner – Cooperman

It was a great pleasure to take part in the Amy Austin at Hill Valley. After a quick dash up the M6 toll and getting lost several times thanks to the theaa.com, I found myself on the car park a couple of minutes before tee off and dying for a p**s. Not the best start but, a solid drive off the first settled the nerves.

The course was, unfortunately, short (7 par 3’s in total) and soggy but still the weather was superb and made up for the lack of interesting holes. A steady start was had by most, even though there was no indication we were playing a temporary green on the second. Both Greggor’s and I had steady starts and began to set the early pace, although I must admit I had plenty of good bad un’s that kept me in the race. A struggling Baxter managed to hit a decent drive straight, after topping a few of his previous tee shots, into a towering oak in the middle of the fairway and dislodged what will be forever remembered as ‘Baxter’s Bow’.

News of another of Pedro’s massive power draws reached us on the 11th and we watched in amazement as he launched himself, literally, off the 13th tee for the longest drive hole. No guesses for who won that prize. The nearest pin prize was won by the narrowest of margins, as Greggor’s deftly chipped just inside Ron’s earlier attempt.

A tight game continued until we reached the 16th tee. A dog leg right short par 4 that Greggor’s decided to try and draw his tee shot over the tree lined right hand side of the fairway. A brave but but ultimately foolish attempt. Baxter finally showed his form with a Birdie that gave us an indication of what would unfold over the coming weekend (25 my arse!).

And to the final holes where a steady finish was enough to see off the chasing pack and my first WHV victory complete.

The evenings celebrations began with a trip into the nightlife capital of Shropshire. We were met by a strong smell of dog s**t at the first establishment we visited, and after a quick shot of banana sambouka decided to depart into a slightly fresher smelling bar. A few more and the pool table beckoned where I was to lose £40 to Pedro and Bruce, cheers Ron! The evening’s drinking continued with pace and after bartering heavily with the Doormanwoman Ron paid us into the highlight of the evening, the little Chav Palace. Much to our amusement, It appeared that the door staff had developed a new sport, chav hurling. A couple more beers and back to a rowdy hotel bar where the evening continued into the early hours in preparation for the weekends main event.
