1 point victory in the Gibbon Invitational  is dedicated to the Jeff Ritter Golf App.

You couldn’t have picked a better day to play golf in March. The weather was hot, the course was in great nic, the golf wasn’t to bad and Curt made a rare appearance.

This year the Gibbon attracted 12 members and Ron. Unfortunately our 1^st ever category Z golfer couldn’t make it but we look forward to his return.

A lot of expectation was on Millers, who had won the first tournament of the year and was looking for a clean sweep, who had been continuing with the lessons he had over the winter period. However, after coming last in this event with 22 points I think he needs to ask his instructor what the 7 iron up the arse is really about??? To make matters worse for him he was seen to fall over whilst on the 16^th tee trying to put his tee into the ground. The result of a bad day was having to down a foot and half of lager, which he managed to mess up as well.

From what I can tell the golf was generally ok, with no one having a really great day. By the sound of things if Web Donk’s putter had been working he would have walked away with the title. But as it wasn’t it meant I won the very sort after Gibbon Cap. (which even in the state it is in is worth more than the money I got for winning!!)

In addition, our tournament organiser, the TD, had proudly declared that he had 3 new prizes up for grabs. The 1^st being 3 Srixon golf balls, which had won at last years Captain, for the nearest to the pin in 2. 2^nd a empty green bottle of becks, which he had removed the sticker and claimed was an antique, for the Shark. And the 3^rd one was a dirty bottle, for the Big Dog, which looked as if a big dog had used it for something else.

Over all it was a great day and thank you to the TD for organising it.

Just to clarify that GambleGibbon took no 50 pence bets at The Spittle, although has posted slightly concerning financial results of an £11 deficit following the first event of the season…

The Gibbon Invitational 2012

The TD would urge all members to get sucked into what promises to be a quality golfing extravaganza for the second tour event of the season on Saturday 24^th March. The venue will be the Menzies Welcombe Hotel, Spa and Golf Club, Warwick Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 0NR www.welcombehotelstratford.co.uk/golf.aspx

Bacon Rolls and Coffee will be served in the Ryder Suite from 10.15am and the golf will commence at 11.04am on the 6288 yards par 70 championship course,  which includes three par fives and five par threes.

As well as the Gibbon Cap for the winner, the field will be competing for the shark headcover for nearest the pin on the 6^th and the dog headcover for the longest drive on the 16^th – these prizes will be supplemented by the introduction of the Antique Clear bottle and the Antique Green bottle respectively and there will also be a prize awarded for the straightest drive on the 8^th. The last-placed entrant will also of course be required to see off the contents of the WHVGS foot and a half in view of the membership following the event.

The prize structure for the event will follow an innovative and superior format which will reward all entrants and will also ensure that every stapleforth point scored will influence the overall prize allocation.

Following the golf, the players will return to the Ryder Suite for Chicken & Mushroom pie with seasonal vegetables and new potatoes.

The entire cost of this fabulous event will be £40 per person inclusive of competition entry fees – please therefore inform the TD as soon as possible that you plan to get sucked in.

Range tokens – £3 for 40 balls.

Strokesaver cards – £4.

GambleGibbon wagers – £1 minimum, £5 maximum.

Following discussions/agreement with the Board and subsequent negotiations with Shirley GC, I have agreed that the 2011 Gibbon will be re-played at Shirley at no cost to the society…there will however be an agreed ‘Green Fee’ payable by all participating members at a rate TBA by the 2010 Board in order to bolster the warchest for the 10-year celebrations.
 
Lovely work and could the WD please communicate via the website that we no longer require the 3rd July to be pencilled into members’ diaries this year -ta.

And I’m Supposed to Be Happy with More Board Pork?

Far be it from the WD to editorialise stuff, but is this really good news (or excellent work as the Presidential email endorsement would have it)? So you played in the cold and the mud of the Gibbon, at a ridiculous price, with no food and your compensation is that more money is going into Society Coffers? We were promised some free World Cup golf, but no, we will waste more money on Elegant Regalia for the Board, or at worst go towards feeding local urchins at the end of an under attended AMG – this place gets more like the Catholic Church every year!  There had better be strippers AND burgers at the 10 year bash or the board will risk losing the support of the WHV media!

He was also seeking confirmation for the runners and riders for this weekend’s BIG sporting event – sod your six nations, gold cup or Man U Liverpool match  ups, the smart punters will be looking to see if Noz can get 20 points off his new realistic handicap.

2010 Calendar

In the absence of any updates from TD or Pres on who, what, when etc. for the first event of the season, here’s a selection of the early 2010 banter:

• Rob seemed concerned about 6 nations matches clashing with the Gibbon
• Bruce and Dougal pointed out that the English Eggchasing wasn’t on until the evening, and it’s not as if anyone cares
• Little Hero helpfully pointed out that the clocks “spring” forward on the 28th – put it in your diaries gents
• Idiot Rob weighed in with some details about baseball forfeits being recorded as 9-0, but in football they’re recorded as 1-0 – a blatant untruth corrected by the Prof
• The Gaffer let us know that the 20th is actually the birthday of Steve McFadden, which is obviously much more relevant than some nonsense about posh blokes playing rugby
• The banter is likely to accellerate at the crucial date approaches

It's only a matter of time

It’s  been a while since I posted, apologies from a new Dad who has to go to Brussels to get some peace and sleep.

I am pleased to be able to bring you the following message from the President:

Dear WHVGS Members – I am delighted to be able to satiate your desire to know the details of the first 2010 WHVGS Tour Event – The 2010 Gibbon.

My delight is two fold, firstly because the TD has actually organised it at a proper club, for proper golfers this year – which I know the Player’s Rep will appreciate and secondly because the first tee shot of the 2010 Tour will be the inaugural shot with the WHV Spoon donated to the WHVGS by the TD and will be presented to the 2009 WHV OoM Winner on the day – I for one will be standing well back.

The Board will drip feed you all with more WHVGS information regarding the coming 2010 Season and society developments by the mediums of both email and the website over the next few weeks – (including the incorporation of a Match Play event and a Skins event within the Tour Calendar) – as the excitement builds towards the commencement of the season proper, but in advance of that gentlemen, I give you the Gibbon…..

The 2010 Gibbon Invitational

The TD and Board would like to announced details for the opening event of the 2010 WHVGS season – The Gibbon Invitational.
 
This prestigious event will take place at Shirley Golf Club, (see link below), on the afternoon of Saturday 20th March, first tee off at 2pm and will once again ignite the clamour for WHVGS fame and fortune. Last year’s winner of the Gibbon (playing of 20 chuffing 6 – how things have changed…), went on to greatness, I just hope he hasn’t lost the “The Gibbon Cap” : www.shirleygolfclub.co.uk
 
The damage will be 45 lads per boy including green fees and entry fee although food is extra, albeit reasonably priced.

Not long till somebody hopefully wrestles the prized Gibbon Cap from Nozzer’s swede.

PS – Congratulations from the WHVGS to the new fathers of Maximillian and Eden who were dropped off by the stork during the closed season – Lets hope that new found fatherhood does not impinge on your ability to get down the range and to compete in the Tour.

Web Donkey Note – If we’re playing the Gibbon at Shirley GC, surely the sweaty cap should be replaced by a Yarmulke. Oy Vey!

Web Donkey Note 2 – Noz has fallen foul of dress code, and behaviour codes, at Shirley GC before. Something about tailored shorts and too-short socks, and using a mobile anywhere except the car park, oh and eating chips in the wrong bar. Gotta wish them luck for the prestigious visit of the WHV.
