Aust has already had some grief about this, but it was from Noz, who would moan about getting too much meat in a bacon roll, or too much cleavage at a meeting, so pinch of salt about the complaint and all that.

Well done to Aust for ticking another major off on the SLAM – WHVGolf.com is looking to deliver some exciting developments in this area during the off season – get ready to be thrilled…

Here’s the report – I don’t have the cards yet, but the points from the Handicap thingy should let me pull an OoM together before the Amy & JUG.

No pictures or anything from the PEDRO, as I understand that Tropical Storm Irene was approaching Northamptonshire at the time, so here’s a nice picture from the internets.

THE PEDRO MASTERS – 17th SEPTEMBER 2011

MATCH REPORT

The Pedro Masters was held at Hellidon Lakes Golf and Spa Hotel near Daventry. The players arrived ready for what was expected to be a hotly contested tournament. Excitement was also high with the return of Pedro Power for the first time this season.

Players were greeted by the overly helpful golf assistant at the hotel, whilst he seemed keen to tell all of the players every detail about the day, all of the players were far more interested in the story that was unfolding from Pedro about the previous nights events with our antipodean friend. Whilst the story was not particularly clear (mainly due to Pedro still appearing to be feeling the effects of the alcohol he had consumed – as Dougal’s car could testify to) it appears that a fairly normal evening out with Mr Clegg had involved 17 year old vigilantes and 6 police cars – at this stage the whereabouts of Mr Clegg was still unknown.

Lots were drawn for the betting order with Pedro Power, following which the final group was decided as Professor, the President, Noz and Aust.

The golf course itself was interesting and in good nick whilst, luckily for the eventual winner, it was also fairly short and despite its name involved very little water.

Having waited for a long while for the first green to clear none of the players proceeded to manage to actually hit the green and unfortunately after just one hole the rain appeared.

Despite the wet conditions it soon became clear that the greens were particularly tricky with some unexpectedly quick downhill puts to be found.

The longest drive was held on the 8th and was won by Pal O’ Onions (£5) despite valiant efforts from Noz and the Professor to outdo him.

With lightening closing in over the last few holes the players bravely continued (despite serious risk of death). The nearest the pin was held on the 18th and won by Pedro (£5) with a soaring iron shot.

The eventual winner was Aust (£40) with 39 points followed by The TD with 36 points (£23).

————————————–

Having now read this, I agree with Noz – it makes you miss match reports from Mike!

Q&A

1. From I Hall, Avon – “Will it be at some Lake Happy Corporate Venue? I do so hate traditional parkland & links golf.”

Of Course it will you Idiot, the golf will be played at Hellidon Lakes in Daventry (http://www.qhotels.co.uk/hotels/hellidon-lakes-daventry.aspx)

2. From C Gregory, W Mids – “Will I have to bring my own bacon roll?”

Of course not TD, that would be ridiculous. Bacon Roll & coffee will be served from 11 o’clock for an 11.40 tee-off

3. From C Lanman, W Mids – “Do they serve catfood in tomato sauce?”

There will be pie and chips for lunch afterwards. Unfortunately Curt I cannot guarantee they serve that particular filling.

4. From T Begley, W Mids – “Does it provide value for money?”

Of course it does Beggles. PEDRO Power are sponsoring it and all of the above will cost you £35.

5. From P Milmore, W Mids – “So that will be all of my outlay?”

Don’t be daft son. You will also have to provide the TD with a tenner for competition entry.

6. From M Alsopp, W Mids. “So how much money will I win?”

Well Mike, the PEDRO Master is the Money event of the tour. Thw winner will recieve the cash usually reserved for 1st and 2nd place combined. (At the AGM, if you attend it, obviously).

7. From S Cooper, W Mids – “But I remember picking up cash for coming second?”

That’s correct Steve – the PEDRO Power operates a unique fines-for-second-place formula, with a maximum total fine of £5 per player. This pot you can take home on the day if you’re 2nd.

8. From W Spittle, W Mids – “Is that all of the prizes available?”

Noz – this is sponsored by PEDRO Power, so of course not. There’s the £5 per nearest the pin in the final fourball for a start. You know, when the 3 players who have bet the most with PEDRO Power play Pedro as the last fourball of the day? Well any of those 3 could win an extra five pounds per hole.

9. From S Harrison, W Mids – “So apart from winning bets at generous prices, I could pick up £25 even if I finish last?”

And that’s not all Donk. Due to the outraged feedback at the Captain’s matchplay not actually being a matchplay event, PEDRO Power will further be sponsoring a free-to enter post event matchplay simulator to the tune of £20 to the winner.

10. From a BetRon representative, W Mids – “PEDRO Power are great aren’t they?”

Yes

11. From A Austin, W Mids – “Do they have buggies?”

Yes, I can reserve them if you let me know.

12. From D Compton, London – “The PEDRO is a fantastic event isn’t it?”

Indeed it is Dave. Get sucked in.

13. From B Hopkin, W Mids – “Can I bring new members?”

Of course you can Brucey. Remember the £10 membership and £25 shirt fees, and penalty for underhandicapping people you introduce if they do well.

13. From D Baxter, W Mids – “Is there a danger that the PEDRO Masters will overtake the President’s Classic to become the 2nd best event on tour??”

It’s possible Pres, it’s just possible….

Mainly down to generosity of Pedropower and the innovative format devised by the Prof, the masters sees more money changing hands than would please Jesus.

Unfortunately, this year’s event saw Ron take a resounding win and quite a few quid for his backers.

I managed to clear £40 from an inspired gamble based on the unique format of the day. My only question was which of the members would buckle the most under the pressure of specific challenges not to miss a putt or not go in the water. The overall results will follow but suffice to say that getting the pres at 8/1 was too good a price to miss.

Sure enough, 4 shots into the drink on the last covered my costs for the day. Thanks Doug.

Less than 24 hours to go. 90 miles to Cambridge from Birmingham – M6 to A14 – easy peasy. Weather looking mixed.

From the Captain:

No on line course guide so no opportunity to decide fine holes yet, or draw a dodgy beard. 4rse.

Pedro Power will award £5 for each nearest the pin within the final fourball. This is £25. Prizes roll over if no player on the green.

The final fourball is contested by Pedro and the three persons who have bet the most with Pedro Power on the day. These bets will be private and no person will have a view of how much other people have bet, although no doubt they will be able to determine where the bets have gone by the odds board. Betting period will be time-bound

Pedro Power will further award £20 to the bogeyman (or split between the bogeymen). These are the people with the most net bogeys (1 pointers) on their card (hence the bogey column on the totals sheet).

TD – Roll up standard prize money for second & first place all to winner, but if this totals more than £40 cap it at £40 and split the rest between nearest the pin & longest drive.

Pedro Power will donate cash on the day, this is not to be included in earnings totals for the year (Donk). All other money, including fines, to be collected by TD for Payment at AGM. Should hopefully give us a bit of shrapnel for splitting the cash at the AGM.

Our esteemed TD chipped in with “Remind people to bring pound coins”.

Who’s that guy that’s just turned up and nicked our money?

Bicester was the home to the Pedro Masters this year. A very handy course for all, approximately 1 hour drive from London and Birmingham. It also provided a good excuse to have a night away from her in doors.

At this event a new member turned up and introduced himself to the group as Campo, this made a total of 14 players for the masters. Lots of questions were asked as to who this new guy was and how did he get his name. The guest was invited by Miller who failed in his duty to make Campo welcome by turning up just in time to tee off and then leaving him to pay all the fines. Fortunately, Campo had one of the days, even thou his sombrero was changed for a pork pie hat, and he managed to take everyone’s money for winning the event with 34 points and getting closest to the Pin on the 12th (£5)

After the winner was announced it was decided that the Miller must be punished for bringing along a new guest with a doggy handicap. The punishment is still to be decided but a handicap cut looks on the cards. On hearing this someone was heard to say to Campo “Double Celebrations; you win and Miller pays the penalty. Maybe my day is just about to get better”

The course appeared to be relatively short from the scorecard (6000 yards) off the yellow. There was a discussion on the tee about whether we should play from the whites. It was soon established that the extra 255 yards was too much to ask of men in their prime. S with tradition Campo teed off straight down the middle of the first with great a gust. What was missed on the tee behind him was his hacking ability to blob the first. After the 1st Smithy’s driving was straighter than a Irish priest in a congregation of young boys, which isn’t saying much.

It was soon apparent that the yellow tees were a good choice after reaching the dog leg on the 6th and finding out that the driver was required again to reach. The only issue was the shot required a towering flight to cross the lake and land gently on the very slick green. After the 6th the length of the course was reeled back in with the short Par 5 7th which Ron complained about (Pin Position) but was happy to take the Longest Drive Price with a 3 wood. In an unprecedented changed to the price Ron won back the Pedro Fiver which he had previously worked hard to lose last year.

After the longest drive hole everyone move to the Par 3 8th where the green keeper once again must have lost concentration when setting up the tee. One advantage with placing a pin at the bottom of a huge bank just above the bunker meant that it allowed a number of members to misjudge there ball control and spin their golf balls back down a 1 in 10 incline off the green.

Moving onto the back 9 it soon became obvious why the course yardage was only 6000 yards. The course designer must have forget that golf courses were 18 holes and then had to find somewhere to fit in 2 extra holes. He found this by reclaim some of the land from the M40 drainage ditches. Cooperman was very grateful for this design feature as the lack of pin point accuracy from the members soon increased the fine pot with numerous balls going in the water. The fines pot was also bolstered by Pedro getting wet feet and Noz hitting the sand to double the fines. Dougal missed the fairway on the 17th which meant that Coops 31 points and second place pot (£42.50) went past the winners prize (£42) to the great excitement of the group. Will Coops ever be the bride as this was not his first 2nd place this year? 3rd Place went to Web Donkey with 30 points. All in all it was a good day for the bookies so there was only a small pay out for Pedro with two winning each way bets on WD. The only other pay out went to Ron who took £20 in Pedros special par 3 competition between the high rollers in the final 4 ball.

Overall the whole the course was in excellent condition considering the rain which came before the Masters and for the 5 minutes at the start of the back 9. At this point the greens were wetter than Millers bed after a night out on the beers. However, a range of compliments on the course and greens where made at the end of the event, in particular Greggors was heard saying “I would be happy to spend my own £25 to come back here” this did raise the question as to who’s £25 he spent to enter the event.

Everyone seems to have a great day and I am sure there will be report on the nights activities later with some damming photographs. I had an excellent day and was made most welcome up until the point when I was announced the winners! Anyway I am look forward to seeing you all again when I can bring my winnings back for The WHV Open.
