The penultimate competition before the CJ weekend was here, and 16 of us (including two of Leigh’s mates) headed off to play Oxford Golf course, the oldest course in Oxford, for the Son of Pedro at Youngun’s (Leigh’s) home course.
Boyce and I arrive early, the rain that was, all the way down the M40, has stopped and the sun was shining. We got a decent full English breakfast, and as everyone else arrives they also get some breakfast. It was the captain’s charity the day before so we are expecting the course to be in good condition. Practice on the putting green indicates that if the greens were anything like it, they would be fast.(and they were fast )
Dougal throws the balls out the hat and the 4 groups are selected in the usual way.
I am in the first group with Pedro, Hole in One Jon and Noz (the only group not to have a local member in it to give any clues about the course)
The 2nd group is Boyce, Juice, Ads and Youngun.
The 3rd group is Idiot, Millers, Finchy & Rupert
The 4th and final group is Butters, Greggs, Pres and Paul
The course is in exceptional order and the greens are like lightening. I play well the front 9 scoring 18 points with a blob on the 3rd hole. Noz has scored 9 ,Peds 12 and HiO Jon is just in the lead of our group with 19 points The back 9 I have 3 pars and a birdie and no blobs and score 21 points giving me a good total of 39 and the lead in the clubhouse. Noz has 24, Peds 28 and HiO Jon 30.
Boyce has played steady golf with no blobs and also comes in with 39 points in what lookes like a close group with Youngun 36, Juice 35 and Ads with a broken rib did well to get 11 points before retiring injured.
In group 3 despite still drunk and wreaking of a brewery, after a day at the cricket the day before, and unable to account for 3 hours, Miller’s also comes in with 39 points ( after reviewing his card and correcting the score down to 39 from 40). With Idiot on 34 and Finchy on 29.
The final group was close with Butters on 34 , Pres 33, Greggs 31 and Paul 29.
A good day , lovely weather and a return to form for me from last last time out to first. Plus a half inch from Juice getting a hole in one but as HiO Jon said it wasn’t though.
