The third event of 2020 had challenging conditions for all; howling wind, sodden fairways and three pints for Gregs prior to the first tee!
16 players teed it up at Ingon Manor and this wasn’t just a regular, singles, event. Donk split the field into four teams (Horse Team, Animal Team, BG Boys & Bored) to compete for some exclusive medals, which had been expertly engraved with very complimentary monikers.
Gregs marked out the longest drive, which he annoyingly won, with a stone that weighed the equivalent of an anvil. Gregs declared this stone a new WHV “asset” and was very annoyed when nobody from the groups behind picked up the asset, for future use.
Despite the challenging conditions, over half the field managed to score above 30 points. Noz (19) and Youngun (16) were the only two players to score less than 20.
Coops, evidently the Society’s highest average Stapleforth scorer (having played more than 20 rounds), would have been feeling pretty confident with his 33 points, given the windy conditions, which included winning the Shark.
However, from nowhere based on the handful of events he’d played prior, Vegas hit the jackpot and won with 38 points.

This unexpected singles win probably earned Vegas his invite to the subsequent Cornwall tour, where he fulfilled his obligation of wearing the Captain’s ring on the main night out. The night out in question saw Vegas gain the new nickname of Pickle, due to his facial expression of “lager palsy”, whilst hoovering up the whole table’s supply of chilli pickle with a little spoon.
It’s a real shame that it took Vegas/Pickle over a year to fulfil his obligation of writing this match report.
This is why he should be called Pickle
